Initial design concept and initial consultation with Daniel (Feb 04)

My thoughts approaching the design are to assimilate the essence of a synaptic network.

Also, since I am collaborating this project with Interior Design Studio, I try to think of ways to make the lamp part of larger scheme as opposed to just an independent lamp. And considering that my next project is to develop furniture item for the co working space, I also think of ways to combine the two.

My first sketch is yet undeveloped but translate a preliminary vision. I see a network of vertical elements connecting with each other, for creating light as well as defining visual definition of territory

Adding thoughts to the purpose of the lamp
**Define territory**

According to social psychologist, Irwin Altman, a sense of territory is associated with feelings of belonging and ownership, and privacy is best understood as the need to exercise control over one’s accessibility to others. According to this understanding of human needs, privacy does not mean enclosed space. Rather, it is allowing one to own a piece of private territory within a public space - providing a sense of control and safety, while still being in the “knowing” of the outside social occurrences.
Notes from Thesis I wrote last semester: “Environmental Psychology - Work Space Culture (Based on Google Corporation and Some…)”

My second sketch introduces a slightly more practical visualization of this idea to present to Daniel. However it is still too abstract, and lacks elements that transforms it into practical design principles.

In class I present my thoughts to Daniel.
Daniel sketches a way to materialize this concept into simplified and practical design and its relation to the space

Daniel recommends that I incorporate ropes /wires (or similar) and give various functions. Such as: task light, LED space defining lights) and spot lights. Also, can use fabrics to define spaces.

Things to consider: interaction with user.

I show Daniel work by Partisan Architecture: The Gweilo Lamp. Daniel confirms it is a good reference.
